I am a great believer that sketching is the lifeblood of my practice. Some of my best work is produced when I am out walking with paper and paint. It is only when I am immersed in the landscape that I can truly absorb both the visual and most importantly the feel of my surroundings. My South Downs sketches were all produced over a wet and windy September weekend and the painting reflects this. The Wolds studies on the other hand are ink drawings that I produced back in the studio for a series of larger paintings. These studies with a limited colour palette can be a vital tool in the creative process.
